Closest I could get of a full shot of this panther in Roatan Honduras while still keeping the fence in front of him and behind him out of focus.

The Blue-crowned Motmot (Momotus momota) is such a gorgeous bird and was on my photo wish list. I have a week vacation in February, and for the past few years we have spent it in Central America where the Motmot is found. On the previous two trips, I didn’t see any Motmots in Belize nor in Costa Rica. So on my recent trip to Honduras, I really was hoping to spot this wonderful bird and to get a good shot.
When we arrived at our Bed and Breakfast in Honduras, I was told that Motmots had been sighted nearby. But in a rain forest, even though the birds may be there, they are often hidden by the foliage.
On my 5th night, I went out for a walk at dusk hoping to find a good shot of any bird I could spot. Fortune fell my way when I spotted the Motmot sitting on a branch underneath the shade of a tree. Unfortunately, he was in very low light and I had no flash nor tripod. So I cranked up my ISO, upped the exposure compensation, and tried to hold as still as I could while I took the shot.
Shot taken at 1/8 sec at f/5.6, ISO 800

Facial shot of a Parrot snake (Leptophis ahaetulla) found in Cusuco National Park, Honduras, Central America. Summer 2009.
Looks like he is thinking a little too hard about something.

I took several hours today to finally edit and download my photos from my recent
Bird Photo Tour in Honduras. I saw many new birds and even some I have seen before here in the U.S..
The weather was a little too warm for my liking, however. I had not been back to the tropics in over 25 years, and my tired old bones and heavier frame simply did not have the stamina they once did!
The heat and humidity were really pretty awful!!! Higher elevations did help some.
Regardless, I did persevere and made the best of it despite a nasty fall into a ditch my
1st day there!!!! I did break the "foot" off my Nikon 500mm lens when my rig went crashing to the ground (along with me) and thus had to use my back up Nikon 80-400mm (hand held) the rest of the time there.
Thank the Lord I was not injured worse and that I had a back-up lens with me on the trip.
I am posting this image first as I really like the movement in the wings at a slower shutter speed (1/400th sec) and the artistic feel it emits… ISO 6400
The Hermit is not iridescent nor colorful like so many other Hummers in the tropics, but
it is certainly quite a beautiful and remarkable bird. Enjoy!
